It is always a matter of concern while selecting appropriate and safer cable products at the time of installation whether at home or industry. The main concern is related to fire and the effects of fire on the cables used.
Most of the cables used are insulated with PVC plastics. But the threat of using PVC insulated cable is its behavior when exposed to high temperature or fire. AAAC conductors has better physical, electrical, conductive advantages over
other conductor types. This conductor is generally composed of alluminium manganese silicon alloy ( aluminium alloy 6201) of high electrical conductivity which provided it better mechanical properties after treatment.

The advantages of AAAC conductor are as follows:

AAAC conductor due to absence of steel core within it, exhibits better corrosion resistance even in sea costal areas and highly polluted industrial areas.
The power loss in AAAC conductors is less as compared to ACSR conductors because AAAC conductors are homogenous without any presence of high electric resistant steel.

AAAC cables have more current carrying capacity (ampacity) about 15-20% extra as compared to ACSR cables.

LONGER LIFE Experience in foreign countries shows that All Aluminium Alloy Conductors are in service for over 60 years,
which is about double the life of ACSR Conductors.

The AAAC conductor surface is more hard 80 BHN as compared to 35 BHN of ACSR. This reduces the handling damage of the cable surface and therefore leading to lesser corona losses and ratio interference at EHV.

THERMAL STABILITY AAAC are stable upto 90oC against ACSR conductors which are stable upto 75oC.

Since AAAC shows higher strength to weight ratio, span can be increased from 2 to 15% resulting in overall reduction of cost in towers supports and other accessories in transmission line system.

Abstract

The demand of electricity is ever increasing and gives a high pressure on the existing transmission network. With the existing conductor, there will be more losses occur in AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor), compared to All Aluminum Conductor (AAC). To overcome this problem, conductor as transmission line with capability to conduct more current is needed. Aluminum is a good current conductor; low in cost and lighter weight compare to copper. These advantages enhance the usage of aluminum conductor as overhead line of transmission system. But the weakness is on mechanical part, which is not practical to ambient condition. This paper focuses on the factors that influence the conductivity and current carrying capacity of aluminum conductor. From the metallographic and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis, it will show the reason why the conductivity property of AAAC is higher than AAC. Some experimental results that verify the theoretical values are presented.
